Good of Prince Charles and his people to take the time to contact us on the eve of the strike.

I wrote to HRH the day after the chapel meeting at which we voted for strike action, explaining why we wouldn’t be able to cover the Royal visit and inviting him and the Duchess of Cornwall to the picket line.

I thought nothing more of it until Wednesday lunchtime, when I remembered and wasn’t surprised there had been no reply, thinking it was worth a try.

Then, at about 2.30pm, the mobile rang, one of Prince Charles’s senior aides on the other end, explaining that HRH was unable to attend but that Clarence House had wanted to formally respond to our request.

Given the amount of correspondence the Prince must receive, it was a nice touch for his staff to respond. Thanks on behalf of all the members. Given that HRH is bound by protocol not to take sides, and that he is said to support the work done by local papers, I think we can draw our own conclusions from him taking the time to get in touch.
